Who are Juliao and Zelia ?
Juliao Meleko.
Juliao and his wife Zelia are both 62 years old . They have only got 1 child with 5 dependants . They suffer to do all the work because their family is so small . If he can just come above the situatiion , he will be able to plant more food and provide for many people , who can then also help with the work.
The family owns 5 cattle, 2 pigs , 12 chickens, 2 ducks, 7 mango trees, 3 citrus trees and 10 Cashew nut trees and 3 advocado trees. They have got 15.4 ha of land, of which 3 ha are de-bushed and on which they plant maize, peanuts, sorghum and beans. They are very positive to work with AgriServi to change their piece of land into a semi-commercial farm.
Happy Story – Juliao is very active in the church and it makes him happy . He is also very happy that he can be part of the community . It is a strong community and they always stand together.
Sad Story - He never knew his mother and father . Both died when the children were still very small.
Never forget Story - Juliao told us the story about an old man in their area who was beating his wife on many ocassions . In their area they also had a man and women with a child who had a fish bone stuck in his throat . They took him to all doctors , but nobody could remove the fish bone . Then one day the wife that was always beaten , went to the secretario of the area and tell him that her husband would be able to take out the fish bone , but only if they would really beat him very hard . The secretario then could the family with the fish bone child and he also could the man who was always beating his wife . The secretario then told the man that he must start to take out the fish bone . The man refused and said that he cannot do something like that . The secretario then tell him that he is lying , because his wife told them that he could do it . They started beating him then . While they were beating him , the boy started laughing , because they all knew how his was beating his wife and now at last somebody is beating him . The child laughed more and more and later started coughing from all the laughter . Then suddenly they fish bone popped out and all were very happy . The fish bone was out and the bad man was beaten . That was not the end of the story , because the parents of the child offered a reward to the person who would saved their child . They offered a piece of their land . So it come that the bad man received some land of his own and everybody lived happily ever after and he was never beating his wife again .
Dream for the area: Juliao and Zelia agree that if they would receive a lot of money to spend on agriculture for the area , they would spend all money just to make water for the area . They will make sure that there is enough water for cattle , pigs , other animals and also to irrigate the maize when it is dry .
Their own dream: Their own dream would be just to get some help to open up more land for planting . They understand the concept of semi-commercial farming and would like to change their land into a semi-commercial farm.
Present income: They cannot calculate any income at this stage , but they have always got food for themselves and sometimes even some food to share with other people . .
