Who are Moses and Teresa ?
Moses and Teresa , the mother of Moses and some children and grandchildren.
Moses Melembe is 53 years old and his wife, Teresa 39 years. They had 9 children, but 1 died as a baby of 1 month old. There are 11 people who eat from their house every day. One of these dependants is the mother of Moses. She is in her eighties, but still strong and happy. The general feeling that you get when you arrive with this family, is one of happiness. They really are a happy family and although they are poor, many other people can come and learn from them about happiness.
The family owns 5 cattle, 3 goats, 2 chickens, 1 duck, 2 mango trees, 52 coconut trees, 6 citrus trees and 50 Cashew nut trees. They have got 6.6 ha of land, of which 2 ha are de-bushed and on which they plant maize, peanuts, sorghum and beans. They did not inherit the land, but bought it with some profit that they made on the land of friends. They are very positive to work with AgriServi to change their piece of land into a semi-commercial farm. Although the family only started with their land a few years ago, they work very hard and are a typical example of a family that can become semi-commercial farmers.
Happy Story – Moses and Teresa says that their children are all healthy and happy and that is enough to make them happy again.
Sad Story - In 1990 soldiers killed the sister of Moses. She was attending a funeral and on her way back, she was dragged from her 2 children and killed. This was the saddest thing that ever happened to the family. Other smaller things do happen. Sometimes you plant a crop and then no rain comes. It is very sad to see your crop dies without water.
Never forget Story - Moses told us a very funny story. He was sleeping one night and then dreamed that there are soldiers in their area. He woke up his family and made them run into the bushes. They did not understand what was going on, but were also to afraid to give any resistance. Later they ran into a field that was planted with maize, but he was still not happy and ran to the house of a friend. He only then realized that he never put on his clothes. His friend could only help him with a dress. When it was first light, they started asking around about the presence of any soldiers, just to find out that there was no such thing. Then Moses starts to realize that he was only dreaming and made a big fool out of himself and his family. All people laughed at him while they were walking back to their house and especially for Moses, who was wearing a dress. He will never forget this story.
Dream for the area: Moses and Teresa agrees that if they would receive a lot of money to spend on agriculture for the area , they would buy a lot of extra cattle to pull ploughs and then make it available for free to everyone . They would just continue to de-bush the area and then help people to plant more crops.
Their own dream: Their own dream is the same than their dream for the area .They would first use some money to help them to de-bush more of their land. They would then plough it and plant more maize. They understand the concept of semi-commercial farming and would like to change their land into a semi-commercial farm.
Present income: They earn more or less USD 200 tom USD 300 /month.
