Alfiado is 77 years old and his wife, Auneta, 78 years. They had 15 children of which 5 died. Three died as babies and 2 died as adults. They have got 9 people that eat from their house every day, but many times there are also a lot of the other grand children who come and stay with them.
The family owns 19 cattle, 2 chicken, 20 cashew nut trees, 2 mango trees, 3 banana plants and 20 pineapple plants. Alfiado worked in South-Africa for a long time and that is the only thing that really made him sad, because he lost a lot of his life like that and he also never found the pension that he was saving up while he was working. He received half of his money, but the rest, that was supposed to be paid to him on a monthly basis, he never found. What made them very happy is the fact that they have made so many children. Now that they are old, they have got all this grand children to help them. They carry the water and make the food and are always playing and laughing. The grand children are what they are living for.
Alfiado did not want to tell us any story. He said that it is the job of his wife to remember everything. She had to tell us how many children they had and how many cattle and she had to tell us their ages. To determine their ages, she went to fetch a little special handbag from the hut. In the handbag have been a plastic bag and from the plastic bag she took the 2 ID cards that was rolled into a piece of cloth. That was surely the only purpose of that handbag. Then she started to tell us her “never forget” story and she repeated tell us that we must make sure that all girls who want to get married, must hear her story. She told us that she was only married for a short time when she and Alfiado started to have problems with their marriage. She then later went back to her family and told them that she does not want to be married to Alfiado anymore. Her big family then asked her whether she is always ready for sex, when Alfiado want sex. She said no and that she did not know that she was suppose to be like that. They then told her then that the problem is with her and not with Alfiado and that she will never stay long with any man if she is not like that. She then went back to Alfiado and changed and from that day they were very happy. They had 15 children and are old now, but still happy. She will never forget that lesson that she learnt and she promised herself to always tell every young girl that she see, for in case nobody else have told them.
If they would get a lot of money for agriculture in their area, they would de-bush a big area and then buy oxen and ox ploughs for all farmers.
They cannot calculate any income because they only live and do not work with money. They never buy or sell anything, but they do exchange some of their product for other products.
