Damao is 40 years old and his wife, Violetta is 30 years. They had 7 children, but 2 died when they were still small babies. They have got 8 people who eat from their house every day, but sometimes they also look after the children of some family members.
The family owns 2 Goats, 5 chickens and 100 cashew nut trees. The bad thing in his life is the fact that he has no family. His only 2 brothers ran away in 1992 and never came back. He does not know whether they are still alive or not. His father died in 1995 and his mother in 2000. He is the only one left of his family.
It makes Damao happy if he can stay busy and especially if he can get some extra money for the things he do. He likes to work in his field or to cut poles, when there is no rain. He always needs to stay busy.
The “never forget” story from Damao - He was born in 1977, but from 1983, during the war, the people were not allowed to make babies because there were no food and no water. When the soldiers were around nobody made babies, but when they left, the people started making babies again until the soldiers were around again. They were also not allowed to kill any of their own cattle or goats, but then one day some soldiers came and killed all his father’s cattle and goats. His father never had any animals again and could not give anything to them when he died. He is just very happy that it will never happen like that again. People are different now and all life is different.
If he would get a lot of money to help agriculture in the area, he would first only buy oxen and ploughs and then start to de-bush.
The income of the family is more or less Mt 15000 / year. They use this money to buy the things the children needs for school.
