Zacharia is one of the leaders of the area, but does not know his age. His house burnt down and he lost all his information. His wife is Sailora and she think that she is more or less 50 years. They had 6 children of which only 2 were girls and the other 4 boys. Both the 2 girls died when they were still very small.

The family owns 7 goats, 20 cashew nut trees, 1 mango tree and 1 banana plant.

The bad story of his life is that his house burnt down. He lost all his papers and the few things that he and his wife gathered over the years. Some of the papers that burnt belonged to the Government and they wanted to put him in jail for losing the papers. This then changed to become the good story of his life again. Just when they wanted to take him away to jail, someone came forward to give information about how his house burnt down. There is a very old lady in their area and they think that she was cold and then she went to their fireplace without them seeing her to take some piece of fire to take back to her house. This is normal procedure around the area, to take fire from a nearby house to go and start your fire. The problem is only when you allow some of the pieces of fire to fall in a place where no one controls it. She never saw that a piece of fire fell next to his house. This piece of fire caused the house to burn down. He walked away then as a free man.

Zacharia told us a “Never forget” story about something that his father always told him. His father always said to the children that they must make sure to get cattle, goats and chickens, because they will look after you when there is no food. He has done exactly what his father said and then during the past few years when it was very dry, he sold some animals to keep his family alive. If it was not for that, he does not know how they would have survived. He will never forget his father’s words.

If he would get a lot of money for agriculture in the area, he would only de-bush as much as possible.

His income is Mt 400 / month as secretario of the area and maybe another Mt 2000 /year if there is something to sell.
