Andre is 83 years and his wife, Joalina, 75 years. They had 12 children of which 3 have died 2 as small children and 1 as an adult. The adult child, who died, left 3 grandchildren with them. They are only 5 people who eat from their house every day. Joalina hurt her back when she was giving birth to her last child. She recovered at first, but it is now almost 10 years that she cannot walk anymore. She still does all the housework under the tree, but Andre or the children need to carry her there and then she sit and work there all day.
The family owns 3 cattle, 6 goats, 2 chickens, 20 cashew nut trees (many died during the drought) and 1 mango tree. The sad thing for them are that Andre was working in the mines , underground , for many years to support his family , but now that they need help , they haven’t got anyone . The children do not even phone anymore. He feels that it is his mistake, because he hasn’t got anything to offer them.
They are happy when it rains and when there is enough food. The 3 grandchildren who stay with them also make them very happy. They are also very happy for the water pump that Agriservi fixed for them. Now they do not need to walk so many kilometers to go and fetch water.
Their “never forget” story : Andre has been a soldier in the war and had a gun with which he was suppose to shoot the enemy , but he never had to shoot any other man . Then one day were attacked and the next minute he just saw blood and was thinking that it was him that have been hit and that he is dying now . Only a little later, he realized that he was still alive and not injured at all. They then left back in an army vehicle to go to their offices. When they arrived there, they found out that the war was already finish for some time and that they can hand back their guns. Now he still thinks about that day and how it would have been if it was him that has died there on that day. He will never forget that.
If they would find a lot of money for agriculture in their area, they would de-bush big areas and then buy oxen and ox-ploughs for all farmers. They would make sure then that everyone ploughs and plant.
They cannot calculate any income, because they never buy or sell anything.
