Description:
A 10 pig system for farming with local pigs consists of 1 hectare land that is divided into 4 camps. The pigs grace in one camp for a period of 3 to 4 weeks before they move to the next camp. This minimize the amount of additional food that the pigs would need and allow pigs to run free instead of being held on a rope under a tree. Pasture is planted by hand in each camp and enough trees are left for proper shade. The rotation system allows for enough time to produce good food before the pigs would come to the same camp again. Each of the 4 camps has got a proper facility to provide clean drinking water.
The structure of the camps consists of anchored poles that are planted 3 meters apart and 3 lines of steel wire. Each camp has got a gate to the outside and to the 2 adjacent camps. The rest of the material to make the camp pig-proof is done with local material that is provided by the beneficiaries themselves.
Location:
Mozambique, Inhambane Province, Unguana
Sector:
Semi – commercial farming
Duration:
1 week for tet-up and 3 months for planting , follow-up and training
Dollar value:
USD 1600 to 2000
Project Goal:
As part of the building of semi-commercial farms in the area of Unguana, it was found that Local Pig Farming is a sure way to strengthen the income of the semi-commercial farm. It contributes to the circular marketing system within a semi-commercial farm.
Objectives:
To strengthen the concept of successful semi-commercial farming.
Outcomes:
- Empower subsistence farmers to become semi-commercial farmers.
- Enhanced productivity and income
- Increased potential to bring livelihood into the farming sector and to reduce the total risk of the farming
Enterprise.
- Triggering of agricultural transformation.
Impact on Poverty:
The area of Unguana was a main point of activity during the years of War in Mozambique. Many small farms has been destroyed, people killed or re-located. Livestock was totally removed and years of hard work were made undone. Farmers have not got the ability to recover and government assistance is not possible. New employment opportunities will open up and especially the youth and women will benefit. At present the average yearly income of a small holder farm is between USD 500 to USD 1300. A unit with 10 local pigs brings an additional income of USD 3000 per semi-commercial farm/year.
Activity list:
- Cut open the lines for 4 camps in a 1 ha. Area.
- Buying material – 62 poles, 1800m steel wire, nails
