Jaime is 34 years old and has 2 wives, Hortencia 30 and Fatima 24. The family has got 7 children. There are 15 people who eat at their house every day. One of this people is the mother of Jaime . She is just very old , but it was not possible to determine her age . She cannot use her legs anymore and cannot sit on a chair , but she refused to come for a photo without covering her hair . She crawled back to her hut , refusing any help , and came back with her hair properly covered. These people look after each other . Even some of the children on the picture belongs to other people who cannot take care of them .

The family owns 6 cattle, 3 goats, 25 chickens, 10 guinea fowls, 3 mango trees and 30 cashew nut trees.

The only thing that really makes him sad is that he could not finish school. His father had no money for transport or money to pay for a house near the school where he could stay.

His happy story started very sad. He and his sister were still young when their father died. The sister then took a husband and during 2003 Jaime left to South-Africa for work. His mother stayed alone, but was not strong enough for heavy work. All were very hungry and called him back from south-Africa. He used all the money he earned to buy some items to open a small shop. His mother and sister then looked after the shop when he returned to work, but they lost the shop after a few months. He then came back home again and bought a 201 liter container full of items in South-Africa to open the shop again. He also bought items in one of the bigger towns and made enough profit to buy his first cow and to take his first wife. He also made a stronger shop then and bought 1 more calve. When the calf was mature, he sold it and bought a broken motorbike. When the motorbike was fixed he changed it for 2 cattle from another man. He continued this system until he has got a motorbike now and 6 cattle.

For his “never forget story” Jaime told us about the days when he was a young child in 1995. That was a very hungry time. There were no food and they only ate things that his mother would find in the bush and then cook it in salt water. Sometimes his father would find some small money from selling local Impala beer. They would be very happy then if he brings some flour or rice to eat. Many days they did not eat anything. There also has not been any water. There were no bore holes and they did not even know about carrying water on their head, because there was no water to carry. For drinking water his father would normally just cut some roots from trees or from another plant that grow in the area. Now in the new life things are completely different. They have got food most of the time and there are water holes or bore holes where you can go and fetch water. Life is very good now.

The family income is more or less Mt15000 / month if he includes the money that he would have used to buy the food that they produce themselves.
