Esmael is not part of any group . His farm is big and is seperate from the rest of the farms . He and his family have got great potential to become a semi-commercial , or even full commercial , farming enterprise .

Esmael is 62 years old and have 3 wives. Flamina has got 6 children, Teresa 3 and Eliza 3. His mother of 88 years is also staying with them. All the work is done by himself, his 3 wives and the children.

The family own 60 cattle of which 10 are trained to plough. Most of the cattle are still young and the reproduction figures are very low. Agriservi believes that with a little help Esmael can change his cattle farming sector to become profitable. We need to help him to market some of the older cows and other non-productive cattle and to replace them with at least 2 proper bulls. The family also plants maize and sorghum and beans when it rains. They need one water system and can even benefit from 1 ha under drip irrigation. The family also has 15 goats and 30 sheep. A solar water system that can provide more or less 12000 to 14000 liter of water per day can help to supply food for the animals, even through times when it is not raining. This family can easily produce the showpiece of everything we need to show to other farmers, to see what is possible.

The family also has 30 chickens, 2 pigs, 150 cashew nut trees, 2 mango trees, 1 citrus, 1 papaya and 2 bananas.

The bad things that have happened in his life are the death of his father and 3 of his children that died as babies.

His happiness comes from his farm and especially when it rains.

His never forget story: He came back from the Chokwe area in 1989 and used his money to buy 1 bull and one cow. He then left again to go and work and came back with enough money to buy 4 more cattle the year after that. His cattle started to multiply very well, but then every time when the droughts came, many died again. His hands are always good for planting and for work. One day the minister of Agriculture called him and asked him to prepare for a visit from the President of Mozambique. That made him very proud and gave him a lot of motivation to work even harder. It is just very sad if you have worked so hard and then the rain stay away for 2 or even 3, years and you see how your animals die and there is nothing you can do to help them.

How to get involved in the farming of this family:

  1. They need assistance to work out a proper plan for the farm. Agriservi can do this and help them to re-arrange the assets that they have and to utilize the income from this to support more profitable sectors.
  2. They need assistance to buy 2 proper bulls.
  3. They need assistance to get one solar water system to supply 14000 liter of water per day. Estimated costs is R120 000 or USD 9600.
  4. They need assistance to put up one 10-pig farming system.
