Who are Nassone and Celia?

Nassone and Celia and some grand children.

Nassone is 81 years now and his wife, Celia, 77 years. They had 10 children, but 1 disappeared during the war. Their children are all adults now and most moved away to try and make a living somewhere. They are happy that some of the grandchildren stay with them, but struggle to give food for all of them. They are all very close and all help to get all work done. They are as happy as they can be under the circumstances of severe poverty. Although Nassone and Celia are old people, they still believe that they will be able to make a better live and that even some of their children can come back to make a living from agriculture. They have got 10 people eating at their house every day.

The family owns 9 cattle, 3 goats, 1 pig, 8 chickens, 12 ducks, 8 mango trees, 11 coconut trees, 10 citrus trees and 50 Cashew nut trees. They have got 6.0 ha of land, of which 3 ha are de-bushed and on which they plant maize, peanuts, sorghum and beans. They are very eager to plant more maize, to save up for the dry times.  They are very positive to work with AgriServi to change their piece of land into a semi-commercial farm. They are a strong family.

Happy Story – To be together with their people, whether it is for work, or for church or for just talking, are the things that make them happy. They have got a very strong support system through the church and the members of the community.

Sad Story -In 1984 a baby boy was born for Nassone and Celia, when they were already a little bit too old, but this child made them very happy. Things were very difficult during the times of war, but they coped with everything until one day in 1987 when soldiers took their little boy, then 3 years old. There were so many things happening when their house were attacked that they cannot remember everything, except that when all became quiet again, their little boy was gone. The other survivors told them that the soldiers took the boy, but they never found him again.

Never forget Story -Nassone told us that one Sunday the family was all ready to go to church, except him. He wanted to go and put up another trap to catch some game for the pot. They all argued with him, but he did not want to listen. Then, while he was busy to make the trap, he never saw that another man already made a trap there. While he was busy, the other trap went off and the stick inside the trap shoots out and hit him in the one leg. He was badly injured, but refused to go to the hospital, because the small hospital was right next to the church. Eventually his father forced him to go to hospital and then all people saw him and used him as an example of what happen if you do not go to church on Sunday. From that day he never missed a Sunday service again. Not one of them will ever forget this story.

Dream for the area:  Nassone and Celia agree that if they would receive a lot of money to spend on agriculture for the area, they would make boreholes and put up solar pumps to give water for all people. They believe that it is the only thing that they short in their area. After that, they would get some equipment to come and help them to open more land for planting.

Their own dream: For themselves they would first open some land and plant more food and share the food then with the people who help them. They understand the concept of semi-commercial farming and would like to change their land into a semi-commercial farm.

Present income: They cannot calculate any income.
